本讲摘要

The talk explores how the young Chinese scholars, who embodied both the child’s body and the learner’s body, inevitably became the center of emerging body surveillance technologies in pre-war Hong Kong. By examining the colonial government’s initiation of the school health program and the early implementation of physical education, facilitated by medical officials and YMCA, it demonstrates how bodies of Chinese students became quantifiable and vulnerable entities under the scrutiny of Western medical and statistical gaze. The talk aims to illustrate that the establishment of such repeated measurement practices and remedies in colonial educational spaces served as powerful discursive instruments in taming Chinese children’s resistance to future body surveillance and Western medical interventions. In charting the implementation of body measurement technology in Hong Kong schools, the talk wishes to fill the gap in the history of preventive medicine and health governance in pre-war Hong Kong.
