内容摘要
Modern agricultural science in China has diverse origins. Whereas English-language scholarship has mostly focused on the activities of foreign botanists and agronomists in China, this talk is centered on the work of Chinese experts and farmers. When the crises of the mid-nineteenth century created the need for new developments in agriculture, Qing officials and literati drew inspiration from many places to transform their country's agriculture. This talk focuses on the envirionmental and botanical aspects of this story. It shows how disasters influenced Chinese agronomy, and it explores the movement of plants into and around the country. Finally, it addresses the role of the common farmer in the creation of modern agricultural knowledge.
