科技史研究前沿讲座

本讲座围绕科学史研究这一中心，以跨学科研究视角与研究方法为组织方式，选择近年来新兴的研究领域与专题，安排相关学科的资深学者以其具创新性的研究案例作为示范，帮助同学们迅速了解科技史研究的动态与最新进展，掌握阅读文献和评鉴文献的能力，为硕士生和博士生寻找学位论文研究方向、探索新的学术问题提供启发，激励同学们敢于站在前人学术思想与研究成果的高峰上独立思考问题。

本讲摘要

This talk explores how early modern scholars studied cultural and religious difference. My laboratory is 16th-century Tübingen, where a professor of Greek named Martin Crusius (1526-1607), without ever travelling, compiled the period’s richest record of Greek life under Ottoman rule. This pious Lutheran read numerous books and manuscripts, maintained an extraordinary correspondence with the Greek Orthodox Patriarch, and interviewed dozens of Greek Orthodox refugees. Through analyses of documents in five languages, I show that for scholars like Crusius studying cultural and religious difference required a flexible form of knowledge making in which religion furthered scholarship and in which tropes and techniques from several disciplines came together fruitfully. His was a pursuit in which practices of humanist reading and scientific observing and firsthand and secondhand experiences merged—and one that can tell us much about the relationship between ethnography and encounter, and between science and religion, across the early modern globe.

Richard Calis, 剑桥大学三一学院历史系研究员

Dr. Richard Calis is a cultural and intellectual historian of the early modern world. His interests lie in the early modern history of knowledge, cultural contact, and Christianity as a global phenomenon. He is a Research Fellow in History at Trinity College, Cambridge and obtained his PhD from Princeton University in 2020.

北京大学助理教授，美国普林斯顿大学博士，英国牛津大学硕士。

目前研究方向为东亚交通技术史，特别是无线电广播与大众媒体史。同时也在研究清朝末年科学史，特别是数学、地理知识的传播。他正在修正其首部专书《近代中国的广播与技术政治，1923-1960》。
