开设目的(Purpose of the course):By the end of this course, students (1) will have familiarized themselves with the fundamental concepts of science, technology, and society, (2) will have developed a critical understanding of the relevant literature in this field, and (3) will have acquired the basic tools to analyze the complex relationships between science, technology, and society surrounding them, in China and around the world.

In preparation for each class, students will be required to read in advance specific chapters of the textbook as outlined below in the“Main Content”section(there will also be other readings that theinstructorwill provide during the course, especially excerpts fromsignificanttexts).
There will be three small quizzes throughout the course. The quizzes will be on the content of the textbook only. Each quiz will contain some open-ended questions and some closed-ended questions (e.g., check marks).
Studentswill give a20-minutepresentation inclass (in English).Studentscan present in groupsand should choose one chapter (per student orpergroup) from the following text:
Mario Biagioli,ed.,The Science Studies Reader(New York: Routledge,1999).
At the end of the course, students will write a short final paper, on a topic of their choice (but which must be agreed upon in advance with the instructor). The paper should be 4-5 pages (double spaced), not including the bibliography. The paper will be evaluated on two key parameters: (A) the connection to the content of the readings addressed throughout the course; (B) the student’s critical ability (i.e., the final appears should not be a summary of a textbook chapter, but should contain some critical reflections, comments, personal opinions regarding the material analyzed in class).
The final grade will be given in accordance with the following percentage:
Quizzes: 45% (15% per quiz)
Class presentation: 20%
Final paper: 35%

课程介绍(Introduction):
In this course we frame early modern, late modern and contemporary developments in science and technology within their social and cultural contexts. The format of the course is lecture-based. During each class, we work on readings that explore central topics in science, technology, and society such as big data, epistemic cultures, intellectual property, invention and innovation, large-scale research, science policy, social construction of technology, sociology of scientific knowledge, technology and social challenges, technoscience. Students are requested to take an active role by preparing class discussions and delivering class presentations so as to improve their public speaking skills.
