    The History of Science and Technology is a first-level discipline in science. It plays a crucial role in bridging the liberal arts and sciences and integrating the past and the present. It is indispensable for understanding the historical process of the development of science and technology, revealing its internal laws, exploring its interrelationships with human society, and promoting the integration of the scientific spirit and the humanistic spirit.

    Established in November 2018, the Department of the History of Science, Technology and Medicine at Peking University is dedicated to the historical study of modern and contemporary science, technology, and medicine in China. The department has, within just six years, developed into a vibrant intellectual community, supported by an international faculty, a dynamic curriculum, and an expanding network of scholarly exchange. We currently offer full-time Master's and Ph.D. programs, open to both domestic and international students. In addition, the department contributes actively to undergraduate general education and is committed to building a research and teaching center distinguished by both Chinese scholarly traditions and global academic engagement.

    We now invite applications from outstanding scholars worldwide to join our department and contribute to its continued development  as a leading institution in the field.

    Open Positions

    We seek to appoint two faculty members at open rank. Applicants should indicate the rank for which they wish to be considered:

    - tenure track assistant professor

    - tenure track associate professor

    - tenured associate professor

    - tenured full professor


    Field of Specialization

    History of Science and Technology, with a focus on modern and contemporary Chinese science, technology, or medicine.


    Primary Responsibilities

    - Conduct original research and publish in leading international journals in the history of science and technology

    - Teach undergraduate general education and graduate-level courses

    - Participate actively in departmental academic initiatives and interdisciplinary collaboration

    - Contribute to the development of the department and the broader discipline


    Qualifications

    - A strong research record in modern and contemporary Chinese history of science, technology, or medicine, with demonstrated academic achievement and peer recognition

    - For Assistant Professor candidates: a Ph.D. from a leading institution in the history of science and technology, with postdoctoral experience

    - For senior appointments: a profile consistent with leadership in the field

    - Demonstrated ability to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels

    - Age limits: ≤35 for Assistant Professor; ≤45 for Associate Professor; ≤52 for Full Professor


    Remuneration and Benefits

    1. Cover letter (in both Chinese and English), including a self-assessment of teaching and research abilities, the position applied for, and expected start date
    2. Curriculum vitae (in both Chinese and English), including personal information, research interests, teaching experience, list of publications, research projects, and public service
    3. A list of key publications, including three representative works (five for tenured positions; substantial foreign-language outputs expected)
    4. A six-year research and teaching plan (in both Chinese and English)
    5. At least three letters of recommendation from independent experts (to be sent directly by referees). Letters from supervisors or co-supervisors may be included
    6. For tenured positions: a suggested list of international peer reviewers
    7. Degree certificates and other supporting documents (e.g., awards)
