    Faculty Positions in History of Science, Technology and Medicine Department of History of Science, Technology and Medicine, Peking University

    The Department of History of Science, Technology and Medicine at Peking University invites applications for two faculty positions at open rank. Established in 2018 within the Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, the Department is devoted to the historical study of science, technology, and medicine in modern and contemporary China. Main research fields include core areas such as the history of disciplines, history of technology, history of education, biographical studies, social history of science and technology, social history of medicine, history of disease and public health, and STS, as well as emerging topics including digital humanities, history of material culture, and environmental history. It proceeds from the conviction that the history of science belongs at the center of any serious account of modern China, and that this work gains depth when it remains in close exchange with the humanities as well as with scientific and medical inquiry.

    The Department offers full-time master’s and Ph.D. programs for Chinese and international students and contributes to undergraduate general education across the University. Its faculty work in direct proximity to colleagues across the humanities, social sciences, sciences, engineering, and medicine. We are now seeking two colleagues who will help define the Department’s next phase, within a university whose intellectual range gives this field real room to grow.

    We welcome applications from outstanding scholars whose work centers on modern or contemporary Chinese science, technology, or medicine, and whose scholarship is deeply grounded and capable of engaging a wider field.

    Open Positions

    The Department seeks to appoint two faculty members. Applicants should indicate the rank for which they wish to be considered:

    - Assistant Professor (tenure-track)

    - Associate Professor (tenure-track)

    - Associate Professor (tenured)

    - Professor (tenured full professor)

    Field of Specialization

    History of Science and Technology, with a focus on modern and contemporary Chinese science, technology, or medicine.

    Primary Responsibilities

    - Appointees will be expected to sustain an active research agenda and to publish in leading international journals in the history of science and technology.

    - They will teach undergraduate general education courses and graduate-level courses, supervise students as appropriate to rank, take part in the Department’s academic activities, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

    - Contribute to the development of the department and the broader discipline.

    Qualifications

    - Applicants should present scholarship in the history of modern and contemporary Chinese science, technology, or medicine that has already drawn serious notice and that indicates sustained promise for future work.

    - Candidates for Assistant Professor should hold a Ph.D. from a leading institution in the history of science and technology and should have postdoctoral experience.

    - Candidates for senior appointment should have a scholarly profile commensurate with the rank sought and an established reputation among peers in the field.

    - All applicants should demonstrate the capacity to teach effectively at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

    - Appointments are subject to the University’s current age requirements: 38 or below for Assistant Professor, 45 or below for Associate Professor, and 55 or below for Full Professor.

    Remuneration and Benefits

    Peking University offers internationally competitive compensation and substantial institutional support for research.     Application Materials

    1. Cover letter (in both Chinese and English), including a self-assessment of teaching and research abilities, the position applied for, and expected start date.

    2. Curriculum vitae (in both Chinese and English), including personal information, research interests, teaching experience, list of publications, research projects, and public service

    3. List of key publications, with three representative works for tenure-track applications and five for tenured appointments. For tenured appointments, the dossier should also demonstrate substantial publication in major foreign-language venues.

    4. A six-year research and teaching plan (in both Chinese and English)

    5. At least three letters of recommendation from independent experts, to be sent directly by the referees. Letters from supervisors or co-supervisors may also be included.

    6. For tenured appointments, a suggested list of international peer reviewers.

    7. Degree certificates, employment certificate, and other supporting documents, including awards where applicable.

    Application Procedure

    Applications will be reviewed in two annual cycles. To receive full consideration in the first cycle, please submit materials by April 20, 2026. For the second cycle, please submit materials by September 20, 2026. The search will remain open throughout the year until the positions are filled.
