The history of science, technology, and medicine bridges the liberal arts and science, the past and the present. Indeed, the integration of humanistic spirit into our investigation of the world is indispensable for understanding science itself. Since our establishment in 2018, the Department of History of Science, Technology, and Medicine at Peking University has focused on developing that intellectual spirit through research on the modern Chinese history of science, technology, and medicine.
Over the past five years, the Department has developed a rigorous curriculum and exchange network. Our international faculty attracts full-time master and doctoral students, and will soon begin undergraduate offerings. Our history of science teaching and research platform sits within the unique framework and reach of Peking University, a global institution in the heart of China. We aim to become a premier international department in our field.
We are now recruiting applicants for two open-rank positions to join our department in teaching and research work. Together we will write a new chapter in the development of history of science and technology at Peking University.
I. Recruitment positions
We are recruiting for two positions, open rank. Applicants should indicate the appropriate rank they would like to be considered for, viz:
· tenure track assistant professor;
· tenure track associate professor;
· tenured associate professor;
· tenured full professor.
II. Application Requirements
1. Candidates must possess excellent ideological qualities, academic ethics, a sense of cooperation, and professional dedication, as well as good physical health. They should also have the ability to independently apply for research funds and organize research projects. Due to sponsorship restrictions, PRC citizens including HK, MC, TW, or overseas residents will be considered first.
2. Candidates should specialize in the study of modern and contemporary (twentieth century to present) Chinese science, technology, and medicine. They should possess a doctoral degree from a top university in the history of science. Due to recruitment guidelines set by the university, successful candidates will have already conducted postdoctoral research, or hold a form of professorial rank; ABD’s will not be considered.
3. Candidates should have published high-quality academic books and papers in the aforementioned fields, demonstrating outstanding performance among peers of the same age group and receiving excellent peer reviews. Those applying for associate professor or full professor positions should possess good academic leadership qualities.
4. Candidates should be capable of teaching graduate-level foundational and specialized courses in the history of science and technology, as well as undergraduate general education courses. The languages of instruction are Chinese and English, according to the desire of the instructor.
5. In China, the legal age limit for assistant professor positions is generally not more than 35 years old, for associate professor positions, generally not more than 45 years old, and for professor positions, generally not more than 55 years old.

3. List of published or accepted papers representing major research achievements, as well as three representative works/articles.

5. Three or more recommendation letters from independent experts; additional recommendation letters from mentors or collaborating mentors may also be provided (recommendation letters must be sent directly to the contact person of the recruiting unit by the recommender)
6. For applications for tenured positions (full professor or tenured associate professor), external peer reviews will be conducted according to tenure assessment requirements. Applicants may provide a partial list of recommended experts, and the recruiting unit will contact them directly.
7. Proof of academic qualifications and other materials (note: copies of diplomas and other award certificates are required; transcripts are welcome but not sufficient.)
